Welcome to the Administrative Palace of the Rosia Montana UNESCO tour. Here, we will talk about this large and very imposing building, located in the historic center of Rosia Montana...
Locals refer to this building as the Old Town Hall, although its official name is the Administrative Palace. It was built in 1897. It represents a remarkable example of traditional urban architecture in Rosia Montana. It's intended to reflect the imposing state authority through highly symbolic architecture. Its overall composition, inspired by the Baroque style, is evident in the organization of interior spaces, especially in the arrangement of access and the main staircase, which features symmetrical ramps along the central axis of the plan, converging towards the main hall on the upper floor.
The exterior of the building is marked by an almost rigid order, enriched with decorative elements inspired by the Baroque style, but interpreted in an unexpected way by local craftsmen. Positioned on a wide horizontal terrace, supported by a retaining wall, the building has an imposing presence in the surrounding urban context.
Initially, the building was topped by an impressive Baroque roof, with two levels and a pronounced slope, a detail that can be observed in photographs from the early 20th century. The Palace was initially used as the seat of the "Casa Scaunului" until 1920 when it became the Town Hall until 1968. Subsequently, after a devastating fire in 1968, the building was only partially used, housing a bakery, a weaving mill, offices, and sporadic workshops. After 2000, the building was leased to a foreign investor who wanted to develop a large-scale mining project. It was restored but has not been used. Signs of degradation caused by the lack of current maintenance are beginning to show.
